Normally, by using the command <code>\mathbf{a^2 + b^2}</code> the variables would be written in bold upright letters. However this is not desirable, to obtain proper italic variables in bold font the command <code>\boldsymbol{....}</code> can be used to get nice bold variables and it works for the most other symbols as well.
